These lamps were used before the invention of electricity and can still function today in the event of a power outage. You can actually use a lamp that was once used to heat a colonial or Victorian home. There are a variety of styles and time periods from which you can choose when collecting oil lamps.
The Victorian time period was one when people wanted intricate designs and romantic touches like ornamental carvings and scrollwork. Another thing you may come across in your search for antique oil lamps are lamps featuring Depression-era and carnival glass. Carnival glass is the oldest and dates back to 1907. The distinguishing characteristic of this kind of glass is a metallic iridescent finish that shimmers in the light. Some old pieces of carnival glass actually contain radium salt, such as Radium Ware by the Millersburg Glass Company which was released in 1910.
