The Victorian time period was one when people wanted intricate designs and romantic touches like ornamental carvings and scrollwork. Colonial glassware was definitely more sparse in design and made to be functional. Another thing you may come across in your search for antique oil lamps are lamps featuring Depression-era and carnival glass. Carnival glass is the oldest and dates back to 1907. The distinguishing characteristic of this kind of glass is a metallic iridescent finish that shimmers in the light. Some old pieces of carnival glass actually contain radium salt, such as Radium Ware by the Millersburg Glass Company which was released in 1910.
