Antique Magnifying Glass
Do you enjoy collecting unique items from days past? Or maybe you are a collector of maps, stamps or other items with which magnification is used. If so, an antique magnifying glass would make a great addition to your collection. Also sometimes called a hand lens, a magnifying glass is used to make things look bigger. It is a convex lens with a handle that makes it easy to carry and store. The magnifying glass is a symbol associated with Sherlock Holmes and other classic detective stories as years ago, it may have been used by detectives for finding clues.
In Victorian times there were many uses for a magnifying glass. Ladies may have used these items for tasks like sewing and reading. Like with most every Victorian antique, the magnifying glasses from this time period are ornate and romantic, featuring designs on the handle. One item that you may want to look for is the Victorian silver magnifying glass which is also a bookmark and pencil holder. Speaking of silver, it is the a common material when it comes to the handle. You might also come across wood, brass and other materials.
Finding an antique magnifying glass at your local antique store may not be the easiest thing to do. However, you can likely track down most any kind of magnifying glass for sale online. You will not only find antique items but also stunning reproductions that look like antiques but actually aren't. There are handheld magnifying glasses and those that come with their own tabletop stand. Some magnifying glasses double as letter openers thanks to a flat pointed handle. Others come complete with their own storage box which makes a great gift for the antique enthusiast.
You may sometimes find an antique magnifying glass that is missing its handle, or missing its glass. That is because the oldest pieces may have been through lots of use. There are repair shops that specialize in restoring antiques that can repair an old magnifying glass to its former glory. If you do not have a repair shop in your local area you can find one on the Internet and ship the item to the shop via postal mail. After the repair job is done, your restored magnifying glass will be shipped back to you. An old magnifying glass makes a great addition to any antique collection.
