Identifying Antique Glassware
There are certain characteristics to look for that can help you in identifying antique glassware. If you're new to the world of collecting glassware, a basic knowledge of the different types of antique glass can help you begin the identification process. One widely collected type of antique glass is carnival glass. This type of glass was first introduced to consumers in 1907 under the name of Iridescent Ware. The selling point was intricately molded glass in gorgeous shimmering colors like cobalt, green, pink, purple, orange and even opalescent white.
It wasn't until the 1950s that carnival glass got its name. You may also hear this type of glass called dope glass, as the process used to add the iridescent coloring was called doping by the factory workers. There were more than 150 different patterns being used in the early 1900s when this type of glass was at its peak of popularity. Carnival glass was even known as uranium or Vaseline glass because uranium salt was used to provide a green glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. The biggest producer of this was the Millersburg Glass Company who produced Radium Glassware in 1910.
Depression glass is also a popular type of collectible glass. This glass is characterized by ornate molds, stylish patterns and fashionable colors. Unlike carnival glass, Depression-era glass is not iridescent. It comes in translucent colors like cobalt, green, pink, amber and more. Depression glass was mass produced from the 1920s to the 1940s to give struggling families affordable, stylish yet functional glassware. Often Depression glass was given away with purchases of other items as an incentive. Although not worth much at the time, some pieces of Depression glass are worth quite a bit today.
You may want to read some books on antique glass before starting to collect. Every collector should have at least one price guide for more detailed identification and valuation purposes of various pieces. There are plenty of titles on the market that can be helpful for identifying antique glassware and determining its value. Check out the following titles: Elegant Glassware Of The Depression Era: Identification and Value Guide by Florence Gene, Old Glass and How To Collect It: An introduction to antique glassware by J. Sydney Lewis and Kitchen Glassware of the Depression Years: Identification & Values by Gene Florence.
